Blackjack is a card-comparing casino game where you try to get closer to 21 than the dealer. It’s believed to have originated in France in the early 18th century. For example, getting blackjack (a starting hand worth 21) pays 3:2 whereas elsewhere it pays 6:5. Unlike the European version, the dealer is allowed to check for blackjack and you’re able to double down no matter what value your hand has. Splitting is allowed and you can do this a maximum of four times.
Face Up 21
As the name of this blackjack version implies, both the player’s cards and the dealer’s are dealt face-up. This is also known as double-exposure blackjack. When playing it, the dealer can’t peek and see if they have 21 since both their cards are always face-up. Knowing what the dealer’s two cards are from the start can make game-play less surprising. In many games, the player gets a nasty surprise when the dealer’s second card is revealed and it puts the dealer’s hand closer to 21 than the player’s.
Spanish 21
This variant is owned by the Colorado-based company Masque Publishing Inc. and has been around since 1995. One of the unique features of it is that the decks don’t have any 10 cards – they’ve all been removed. There are still royals worth 10, however. Also, there are many more optional side bets available and if both the dealer and player have 21, the player always wins. With no 10s, getting to 21 is slightly harder.
