The Athletics have released the first renderings of the club’s proposed new ballpark in Las Vegas.
Sitting on nine acres at the Tropicana casino site, the ballpark would feature a variety of seating options, a partially retractable roof, and a fan capacity of 30,000.
Bally’s would tear down the casino to make way for the $1.5 billion stadium. The A’s could request about $400 million in public funding for the project, according to reports. It’s not guaranteed the stadium is built, nor is it guaranteed the A’s leave Oakland.
The A’s claimed the ballpark would be “one of the most intimate settings in Major League Baseball.” The playing surface’s orientation would allow the outfield to open to the corner of Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevard.
The venue would also host concerts, according to the team. The ballpark is expected to welcome more than 2.5 million fans and visitors annually.
“The design pays homage to the rich history of the Athletics as well as the unique spirit of Las Vegas,” said the team. “The plan will feature innovative architecture, sustainability and environmental consciousness, and modern amenities that focus on the peak of excellence in fan experience.”
“From the minute we stepped onto the Tropicana site nearly two years ago, it was obvious what a fantastic fit it would be for a new A’s ballpark in Las Vegas,” said A’s director of design and owner of Schrock KC Architecture, Brad Schrock. “The natural orientation of the ballpark creates not only some of the best views and connection to the Las Vegas skyline from the seating bowl but also opens up the ballpark to the corner in a way that creates opportunities for an amazing energetic public space with open and expansive views into the ballpark.”
The team added that they will continue to refine the “look and feel” of the ballpark over the next year. In other words, the design could change.
