David Schonback Wins World Series Of Poker Circuit Main Event At Horseshoe Hammond

David Schonback emerged with the win at the World Series of Poker Circuit main event on Mar. 6 at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana on the outskirts of Chicago. The resident of Geneva, Illinois took home the top prize worth $282,725 and his second gold ring this week. “It’s a pretty great feeling to be honest,” said Schonback to the WSOP Circuit reporters after the win. He continued, “Winning two rings in one week isn’t too shabby.”

He also won the $400 no-limit hold’em Monster Stack event just a few days ago to pick up another $52,756. His career earnings after this tournament series now stand at $412,975. Schonback also now holds 1,325 Card Player Player of the Year points, and he has cracked the top 50 in 45th place in the current POY standings.

The $1,700 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament had a prize pool worth $1,655,895 thanks to two starting flights that attracted a total of 1,093 entries. The top 160 players all cashed for at least $2,546 in prize money. There were just 102 that returned for the second day of the tournament, and the field played down to the final ten players after 10 hours of play on Day 2 before the final day of play on Monday.

Schonback was in the middle of the pack in chips when the final day began, and he took out a couple of opponents to pull up to second in chips by six-handed play. He held the chip lead when the final table got down to three-handed action, and then three-handed play became a prolonged battle that continued past a dinner break. Schonback had lost the chip lead for a bit during this stretch, but he took out Laid Hyso in third place to take a chip lead of 17.5 million into the final against the 15,290,000 of Eddie Blumenthal.

The final match lasted only an hour to decide the winner as Schonback consistently increased his lead until the final hand. In that last hand Schonback opened with a raise holding 99, and Blumenthal reraised all in with A8 in the hole. The final board ran out JJ627 that gave both players a flush, but Schonback’s was one card better. Blumenthal was eliminated in second place, good for $174,638 thanks to a strong showing in the tournament. Blumenthal was looking for his second gold ring as well, but he can take solace in the fact that his career earnings now stand at $1,679,192.

A few other notables that cashed in the event included Scott Bohlman (16th), Paul Fisher (25th), Joshua Reichard (29th), Benjamin Grise (48th), Keven Stammen (54th), Richard Ali (60th), Jeremy Joseph (66th), Jean Gaspard (68th), Ryan Jones (89th), Christopher Trombley (105th), Ravi Raghavan (115th), David Larson (137th), and Aaron Johnson (159th).
